Description
Was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1830. He came to Cuba in 1863, painter active for much of his career in Cuba. He is the best-known Cuban painter of costumbrismo. His paintings provide a valuable view of nineteenth-century Cuban society. His works also depict a somewhat idealized view of plantation life.
Friendly but satirical, his paintings of scenes take place in small format, that except casual forays into other genres, are genre pictures.
